    Hello Jason Medina2,

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

I understand your situation — you’ve purchased a device and need to reset it for further use. However, “2016 Microsoft Ireland Dublin D18 P521 IRL” is not a device model.

Since you don’t know the password, you won’t be able to perform a reset through the Windows Settings menu. Instead, you’ll need to reset the device via the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) — this method allows you to reset the device without using a USB recovery drive or reinstalling from scratch.

Step 1: Force the device into Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE)

You’ll need to interrupt the normal boot process multiple times to trigger recovery mode.

    1. Completely shut down the Surface: Press and hold the power button for about 10 seconds until the device is fully off.
    2. Start and interrupt:
      • Press the power button to turn the device on.
      • As soon as you see the Windows logo (or spinning dots), press and hold the power button again for ~10 seconds to force a shutdown.
    3. Repeat this 2–3 times: Each time Windows tries to boot, force it off.
    4. On the 3rd or 4th attempt, the system should detect the failed boot attempts and enter Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE).
You’ll see a blue screen with options like “Choose an option” or “Automatic Repair.”

Step 2: Perform a Factory Reset

    Once you’re in WinRE:

    1. On the Choose an option screen, select Troubleshoot.
    2. Then choose Reset this PC.
    3. You’ll be given two options:
      • Keep my files: This removes apps and settings but tries to retain personal files.
However, since you don’t have the password and the files likely belong to the previous owner, this option may still ask for the original credentials — it’s not recommended in this case.
      • Remove everything: Choose this option.
It will completely erase all personal data, apps, and settings, and return the device to its factory default state.
    4. You’ll then be asked how to reinstall Windows:
      • Cloud download (Recommended): This downloads a fresh copy of Windows from Microsoft’s servers. Requires an internet connection but gives you the cleanest installation.
      • Local reinstall: Uses the recovery partition on the device. If the partition is damaged or outdated, it could cause issues.
    5. Confirm the warnings that all data will be deleted, then click Reset.

The reset process will begin and may take 30 minutes to a few hours, depending on the device and data. Keep the device plugged in and do not interrupt the process.

I hope these steps help you successfully reset your device! Let me know if you need any further guidance.

    Best wishes
