Keep getting Error Code 17193 "Attachment too large" on email that's deleted and invisible

I keep getting this message: "The total attachment size exceeds the limit. Try removing one or more attachments before saving or sending."

Several days ago, I got the message above when I tried to send an email with attachments, but the email just mysteriously disappeared after the Error message popped up which has happened to me in the past. I searched through my draft, sent, junk, & deleted folders to no avail.

A day or two later, I noticed a new folder called Outbox that usually isn’t there that showed one file in it which ended up being the original one that had exceeded the attachment limit. I had already broken that email down into multiple emails and sent them so I just deleted it.

All of the sudden, for some reason, every minute or two I'm getting that attachment Error Code so it's still trying to send the old deleted email from a file in an undisclosed location.

I have a couple of questions.

  1. How do I figure out where that email file is that's generating this message so I can delete it thereby (hopefully) ending the Error messages?
  2. Why do these emails just keep disappearing if I’m trying to send an attachment that’s too large and where do they get deposited? I would think they would just go to Drafts, Junk, Deleted or something so I can correct the attachment size of the draft. Too many times I've had to re-gather all of my information to recreate the original email I was trying to send that disappeared and it's super frustrating.

I'm on a 14" Macbook Pro. The OS is Ventura 13.0.1. I'm on Outlook version 16.68

Thanks in advance for your assistance, insight, & suggestions.

I contacted Outlook Support for Mac as you suggested. These are the directions they sent me which worked. I'm posting them here for anyone else who may run across this problem:

If the Outbox is not showing on your application, please. follow the steps below to enable the Outbox.

    • Open Outlook make it 'Work Offline' (by navigating to Outlook menu bar> Outlook> Work Offline).

    • Quit and restart Outlook. (Now there would be no active connection to the server)

    • Send a test email to yourself (This email will get stuck in Outbox as Outlook is Offline).

    • Go to the Outbox folder and delete all the emails in it. (Note: Move important emails to 'Drafts')

    • Now switch to 'Work Online' and try sending a test email to yourself.

If issue persists, even after clearing Outbox folder and the trash folder. Let’s search for the attachment in Outlook and delete them. To do so refer to the steps below:

    1. Tap on the Outlook Search bar
    2. The search ribbon opens up
    3. Click on attachments --> greater than 10 MB
    4. This will open up a search bar. In that change the size from 10000 to 30000 (depending on your attachment size).
    5. In the search ribbon change the selection to "All Mail" - 4th button from top left in the ribbon
    6. Check if it shows the email which is listed on the sync error window were you see error details and delete it and empty trash folder. (Search for email with subject 'Shown in the sync error window'’).

If you still face the same issue, try searching the email using advanced search in Outlook application and check if that helps locating the email causing the issue.

Click on Search tab> Select 'Advanced', query should 'Subject' - 'Contains' ---> 'Subject 'Shown in the sync error window', click on the '+' icon, size - 'is greater than' -- '10000' and the list will be listed below, search for the email again and delete it. Make sure that the email is completely removed from the application as well as the computer.

Thank you for your prompt response and suggestions.

    Hello,

I have the same problem and none of the solution proposed above works.

I do not use Microsoft Exchange on my computer, by my website hosting service uses MX Plan.

From what I understand, since the message exceeds the size limit, it is not even saved in Drafts or Outbox, this is why it is impossible to find? And I have no "clear cache" options.

Below are the technical specs that I could find in the error log from Outlook:

Outlook for Mac 2021 Build: 16.66.22101101
    Activation Type: Perpetual
    License Type: Retail License 2019
    Activation Domain: hotmail.com
    App Store SKU: FALSE
    Microsoft AutoUpdate Build: 4.55.23010700
Mac OS Version: Version 10.15.7 (Build 19H2026)

Many thanks in advance for looking into this.

    Regards,
