Reminders for recurring tasks on Microsoft To Do sometimes deactivate after marking as complete

I use Microsoft To Do to remind me to complete certain routines on a regular basis when I'm at work, and I noticed that sometimes, after I mark a task as complete, the reminder turns off. Sometimes the reminder will stay on but set for a previous date. So, next time the task is due, I don't get a reminder that time, so while the task still shows as due, I end up being late on actually completing it. It doesn't happen all the time, but it's still frequent and inconvenient. This only happens with recurring tasks. Now I have to remember to go through all my recurring tasks each morning to make sure the reminders are actually on.

Below is a screenshot of an example. I completed this task yesterday, and the reminder worked then. But upon logging into my computer this morning, I found the reminder was off, so I had to manually turn it back on. I only use the desktop app. I do not use the mobile app or the web browser version.

I think the recurrence should be set only after the reminder is set. It seems to work for me. If reminder is changed after the recurrence, when completing the items, the recurrence is still stuck in original date & time.

Is there any updates to this issue? I don't see an option for Recognize dates and times in task titles in the ToDo App settings? This is a real issue when trying to set reminders on recurring tasks!

    Hello Angelina,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

I understand how frustrating it can be when technology doesn’t work as expected, especially when it comes to managing important tasks and routines. It seems that you’re encountering an issue with Microsoft To-Do where reminders for recurring tasks are not consistently functioning. This can certainly disrupt your workflow and cause inconvenience.  Just to set your expectations, we have limited tools to check your account, subscription, and service details in the community.

From the discussions on the web page you’re viewing, it appears that many users have experienced similar issues with reminders in Microsoft To-Do. They’ve reported reminders being late, not appearing at all, or turning off unexpectedly for recurring tasks. Some users have found temporary workarounds, such as recreating the task or logging out and back into the app across all devices, which seemed to help in some cases. However, if issue persist then we suggest to send feedback: Send feedback to Microsoft with the Feedback Hub app - Microsoft Support

Let’s explore some potential solutions to address this issue with Microsoft To Do:

    • Check Smart Due Date Recognition:
      • In your To Do app, go to Settings.
      • Scroll down to Recognize dates and times in task titles and toggle the feature Off.
      • This feature sometimes misinterprets task titles and affects reminders.
    • Recreate Recurring Tasks:
      • Delete and recreate the recurring task. In some cases, tasks created before a certain point may not function reliably with reminders.
      • This workaround might help ensure that reminders trigger as expected for newly created tasks.
    • Keep Task Lists Updated:
      • Click File > Options > Tasks.
      • Under Task options, check the Keep my task list updated with copies of tasks assigned by me to others box.
      • While this won’t track existing tasks, it should work for new tasks assigned.
