How do I associate .docx files with word 2010 so they will open when I click on the document itself?

I have office 2010 professional. I have .docx files that will not associate with word 2010. When I click them, they will only open in wordpad (or another compatible program that I designate). However, it seems impossible to associate with regular word 2010.

I have already tried uninstalling and reinstalling office...Did not work

I have also tried right clicking on the document, open with..., choose default program, browse > (c:/program files/microsoft office {but there is nothing there to associate with winword}) ALSO tried: (C:/program Files (x86)/microsoft office/office14/Winword.exe {but it does not do anything after I click it})

I have also tried to associate file types, but I get stuck in the same spot.

Try re-registering Word: First exit the application. Then hold the Windows logo key as you press R; in the Run dialog box, type winword /r and press Enter (note the space before the slash). After the configuration is complete, file associations should be restored.

If it still doesn't work, take a look at http://www.gmayor.com/document_not_found.htm.

Did you run install as administrator? (Right click the exe file and run as administrator)

Have you tried creating the registry entries manually, as suggested on my web page http://www.gmayor.com/document_not_found.htm..

You will have to run the registry editor as administrator also.

Thanks, but this solution does not fix the problem.  As stated above, It is not a click to run setup.  The paths I show above exist and I run everything from my computer.  It is also not a starter package. It is Office 2010 Professional edition.  Also, it I do not think it is defective because I've now uninstalled/reinstalled 6 times (also done winword repair 3 times).

As another attempt, I went through and uninstalled the microsoft 2007 compatibility pack, which did not change anything.

    • then I uninstalled/reinstalled on the normal mode - did not work

-then I did the same installing as a 64-bit application - did not work.

Again, when I browse for programs, I can get all the way to the winword.exe.  It just will not associate to the application when I click on it.  If i click on onenote (for example), it it opens up onenote.  It just won't go to word!

How did you buy Office, as an online download?  I suspect you have a "click to run" installation.

    Am I running Click-To-Run?

The quickest way to verify you have a CTR installation is go into Windows Explorer and look for an unexplained Q:\ (or R:) drive.

Another method of checking: Go to help panel of any working app: File tab / Help command and look at the Right side of the Backstage panel. It should say "Product Activated" for MSI install or "Click-to-Run Product Updates".

If you installed Office 2010 using Click to Run technology, there are no Office files on the C drive, but on a virtual Q drive. "Microsoft Office Client Virtualization Handler" will appear in the list of programs. Associate the Office files with that

Also see http://www.officeforlawyers.com/outlook/tips/2010beta.html for tips about uninstalling Click-to-run version.

    CTR Introduction (Identify CTR installation)

    https://office.microsoft.com/en-ca/excel-help/click-to-run-introduction-HA101850493.aspx?CTT=3

    What is Click to Run

Click-to-Run is a new Electronic Software Distribution (ESD) technology for Office 2010 that utilizes Microsoft’s streaming and virtualization technology. Click-to-Run provides a much faster and simpler download and installation experience for customers trying or buying Office 2010 over the Internet. Click-to-Run allows customers to maintain multiple versions of Office so customers can easily try Office 2010 side by side with an existing version of Office. Click-to-Run automatically downloads and installs any software updates when connected to the Internet, helping to maintain a more secure and up-to-date Office experience. At this time, only Office Home and Student 2010 and Office Home and Business 2010 will be available through Click-to-Run and limited based on broadband speed requirements.

NOTE:  CTR is a relatively new approach to installing and running Office, Introduced with 2010. So, very few technicians are aware of it, let alone familiar with trouble shooting it. As well, it introduces a whole new set of errors, like the one that you encountered. My personal recommendation is that unless you have a clearly identified need for it and explicitly requested the download, DON’T USE IT.

Rather than reregistering (which works with "normal" installations) you can also try doing an Office Repair:

Update, repair, or uninstall Office Click-to-Run CTR products

    http://office.microsoft.com/en-ca/excel-help/update-repair-or-uninstall-office-click-to-run-products-HA010382089.aspx

Note: Repairing Office Click-to-Run products require an Internet connection to be available during the entire repair process.

    1.     In Windows 7, click Start and select Control Panel from the right-hand list then select Programs.

    2.     Select Microsoft Office Starter 2010 from the list of installed programs and them click Change from the commands available above the list.

    3.     Check Remove Office user settings if you want to reset all options to factory defaults. Uncheck it if you wish to retain any customization that you have performed on the program(s).

    4.     Click Repair and follow the procedure through to its conclusion.

If you repair didn't work, here is how to manually fix CTR file associations:

Cannot Set Word/Excel 2010 as default Program - CTR File Association

Try repairing your Office installation to fix your file associations. If that doesn’t work, try this manual approach

    Quite simple really:

    • go to programs and features
    • go to office click-to-run
    • right click
    • click change (instead of uninstall)
    • let the wizard do its thing and it should work.

If that doesn’t work, try replacing it with regular install.

If you are running a CTR installation, the ultimate fix is probably to get rid of CTR and get a "normal" installation.

Switch to using an MSI-based Office edition (only applies to versions bought online)

    http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/excel-help/click-to-run-switch-to-using-an-msi-based-office-edition-HA101850538.aspx

NOTE: I have been told that Office running in C2R and C2R itself require separate uninstall steps in Programs and Features.

What to look for when switching from CTR to MSI (with picture of “advanced options” link)

    http://www.msoutlook.info/question/473

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2445957 (second half of tip)

http://www.officeforlawyers.com/outlook/tips/2010beta.html for tips about uninstalling Click-to-run version.

To get the full installer for Office 2010, logon to the Account Management Console, click the Download button next to your trial order and then instead of clicking the “Install Now” button, click on the “Advanced Options” link underneath. At the top of the Advanced Options pop-up that you’ll get, you can select between the 32-bit, the 64-bit or the Click-to-Run installer.

Note: When installing the full trial version instead of using the Click-to-Run version will require you to*uninstall any previous version of Outlook first*.

Use the Advanced Options to get access to the full installer which supports synching.

    Alternate Method

You will need to go to “my account” link in order to access all the different installation methods. Here are the full steps:

    1.        Go to the website that you purchased your version of Office 2010 from (Ex:http://office.microsoft.com/buy/  orhttp://office.microsoft.com/tech-guarantee/)

    2.        Click on the green button to advance to the next page (depending on the site, the green button will say something different, but most of the time it is Download Now or Update Now)

    3.        On the next page, look in the top right corner and you should see a link for My Account, click on it

    4.        Now you will see what you previously purchased, next you should click on Download

    5.        Below the Green button (Download Now) Click on Advanced Options

    6.        In this window, click on the link for 32bit.

And you are good to go!

Thank you for your response, but none of these solutions work.  I forgot to mention that I had already tried the reregistering (winword /r) and it does not change things.

I tried the solutions on the website link,, including the regsitry tips, but they also did not help. Mine already had " " around the %1

One of the main problems is when I go to the first solution of "choose default program" the winword (or equivalent) is not an option. When I browse through (the path listed above), it does not let me associate the file.

The only way I am able to open a file is by opening word first and then opening through the program.
