tags! Title is too short. It needs to be between 10 and 255 characters.

I an forced to add tags to a post. I can not type my own tags - I MUST use tags already defined. The tags don't suit my question or situation - what's the point? It's a like some kind of puzzle - I have to keep typing random stuff til I hit up on something in the pre-defined tag list. I have to do it three times! At this point I have ZERO interest in getting the tags to be even vaguely related - I just want to jump through the hoops to post my question...

Good day,

I think that you have misunderstood the meaning of tags in the QnA system, and it is understandable why.

The tags in the QnA system are serves as a forum name. Each tag is the equivalent of "forum name" in other interfaces.

For example, in the MSDN forums you had a forum for SQL Server which include all the general discussions about SQL Server. The link to that forum is https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/sqlserver/en-US/home?forum=SQLServer

In the QnA you have the tag sql-server-general which is the equivalent and you have the link to the "forum" you can use: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/topics/58065/sql-server-general.html

Another example: MSDN transact sql forum: https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/home?forum=transactsql and QnA tag forum is sql-server-transact-sql and URL is: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/topics/58066/sql-server-transact-sql.html

Usually tags means something more focuses than forum name.

Once you get this meaning of "tags" in QnA then you can replace it with "Forums" and all will be clear...

So, is why I said that it is understandable why this is confusing.

I an forced to add tags to a post.

Yes, this is a "forum(s) name" where you publish the question in.

I MUST use tags already defined

List of forums are always redefined in any system :-)

Moreover, this is not a 10 people forum but a millions users (in theory) forum and if anyone will be able to create new tags than we will end with 10 millions including probably 999900 of them duplicated. For example one person will create "sql server" and the other will create "Microsoft SQL Server" and another one will create a tag "sql-server" and so on...

Therefore tags are predefined by the forum admins

Note: the same concept of "tag" like a "forum name" is used in some other systems like stackoverflow

It's a like some kind of puzzle - I have to keep typing random stuff til I hit up on something in the pre-defined tag list.

Unfortunately this is a poor design of the system. You are right

But there is a solution! Download the QnA extension and you will get all the tags (according to the update date of the project) in one simple dropdown box :-)

Title is too short. It needs to be between 10 and 255 characters.

I don't think that the title is is too short. The issue in the QnA poor design is that we can only see the title and not the content and in this case the title with 255 cannot provide the necessarily information about the content of the thread in order to understand what this thread about

In poor old systems which fits the late nineties (when the internet speed was several KB per second) the title was designed as short test, but you could also see the starting of the content which provide a bit more information about what this thread about.

For example stackoverflow

In more modern systems which were designed in the early 1920s or a bit before, when the internet speed allowed to get more information and send more requests to the server and Ajax become a norm (standard if you want), then systems were designed to provide the entire content of the thread in the main page.

For example you can see the MSDN forums and k4school forums (in Hebew). In such systems, you can open/close the content of the thread - usually by clicking the title or a button near the title

This is screenshot of the MSDN for example

This is screenshot of the K4school forum for example (developed around 2001)

But again! The solution is simple...

Download the QnA extension and get the same behavior :-)

Moreover, the QnA extension has more advantages and multiple features including cleaning the page and redesign it.

After installing of the extension you get this page

So, where do I download the extension?

It is an open source JS project on GitHub
