My PC is now very slow after doing Windows 11 24h2 update :(

So I was basically forced into doing this update which I had heard some bad things about, and my PC is running so much slower following the update.

I have updated all graphics drivers too. On some games, my screenshare on discord is very choppy when sharing a Fullscreen game for friends to watch which was not a thing prior. Even when using windowed as a work around, my PC is still very slow.

However, I cant revert the update even though I only did it 3-4 days ago, where the cut off is usually 10 days which is extremely infuriating.

This is honestly a terrible answer because you are not addressing the underlying problem. The update itself. Nothing about this user's PC is the issue. The issue has to do with the update and how to address that.

Mason, my fix was to download and install the latest image from Windows 11 download page. The full download includes some patches to fix the issue. Install it like an in-place upgrade.

Not sure what your experience has been but on many PCs I support I noticed several Windows background services using 100% resources on my CPU. I have even experienced this on my home PC.

Good luck. Please write back if this was helpful so that the rest of the community may gain from it.

Your fix unfortunately does not identify the underlying root cause as well. All you did essentially was reformat and that may have reset values back to default, but as to the specifics of what caused it (i.e. the "root cause") is still left unknown. In my case, shortly after updating to 24H2 my desktop took FOREVER to boot. Maybe 45-60 seconds or so minimum. It was actually caused by the fact I had turned on "Smart App Control" in Windows Defender. The minute I turned that off, it went back to normal.

TLDR - Turn off Smart App Control in Defender

Yes but the underlying cause or not he did fix the problem ..after reading your message I also turned of smart control its worth noting if you do that you need to rebuild to turn it back on. However it did seem to speed it up on some gaming performance of course, it wasn't slow before this update .. i think ill try the other guys thing and see if that makes it even better

just out of interest why does the image have patches that windows update doesn't? i downloaded the image and now im installing it and it's doing "updates" are these patches? If these are updates it might just get worse as its clearly not just updating the image and is getting something from online

Hi Mason, thanks for reaching out. My name is Bernard, a Windows fan like you. I'll be happy to help you out today, my timezone is UTC +8.

I understand the issue you have, there is nothing to worry I am here to assist, this issue occurs when there are unnecessary services running in the background or the driver is not compatible with the new update, in this case, kindly follow the steps below:

    Method 1. Do clean boot:

A “clean boot” starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs, so that you can determine whether a background program is interfering with your game or program.

    • In the search box on the taskbar, type msconfig and select System Configuration from the results.
    • On the Services tab of System Configuration, select Hide all Microsoft services, and then select Disable all.
    • On the Startup tab of System Configuration, select Open Task Manager.
    • Under Startup in Task Manager, for each startup item, select the item and then select Disable.
    • Close Task Manager.
    • On the Startup tab of System Configuration, select OK. When you restart the computer, it's in a clean boot environment.

Method 2. Run memory diagnostic tool: The memory diagnostic tool is a RAM test to check if there are any RAM issues.

    • Press Windows key + R, then type in mdsched.exe hit OK, then restart the device.

Note: If the issue persists, can you please check the System logs on the PC so that I can further examine what is the root cause of the issue?

To do this kindly follow the steps from this link:
