Microsoft XPS Document Writer Download for Windows 10

A combination of a recent Windows update and Quickbooks update has left us without the XPS Document Writer, which is necessary to save or print invoices from Quickbooks.

The XPS Document Writer is not an option when trying to install a new printer and neither the XPS Service nor XPS Viewer are options listed in "Turn Windows features on or off."  I suspect we need to reinstall the Writer, but I'm unable to locate a version for Windows 10.

We have already tried a system restore, but this failed to resolve the issue.

The only link I have found: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=11816 is not compatible with Windows 10.

Where can I locate the XPS Document Writer for Windows 10?

Hi Katherine,

Hit Windows key + R together, enter: optionalfeatures

Just check once more to see if the "Microsoft XPS Document Writer" exists, at least it pops up on my Windows 10 with 1803. Check that if not already, click OK. Now we need to bring back the XPS Viewer.

Go to Start, look for "Apps & features", then click that. In the new window under Apps & features, click Manage optional features. Click "Add a feature", then look for XPS Viewer, and click the Install button that pops up.

If this doesn't work at all, please provide me with your Windows 10 edition (Home, Pro, Enterprise), and I can look into this further for you.

Let me know.

>>Found this link - worked for me! Allowed me to reinstall XPS Document Writer.<<

https://superuser.com/questions/1192920/how-to-force-xps-service-installation-on-windows-10

This worked perfectly for me. Downloaded the zip file and followed the KB instructions. Worth repeating here:

File download found here -- just click download: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B8Zv87UX9gSKLV9ud3c1ZFAtcjA/view

Instructions: I followed them with following exceptions -- ignore Windows 7, worked for Windows 10. I could not remove the XPS printer because it was not there. I just ignored that and went to Add printer. All else I followed and XPS was installed.

    Katherine,

Just an update. Try this, hit Windows key + R together and go into Run. Enter the following to go into Device Manager: devmgmt.msc

You should now see a new Device Manager window. Click your computer name in the tree view, the very first item on the top of the tree.

On the menu bar, click Action > Add legacy hardware. Click Next. Check "Install the hardware that I manually select from a list (Advanced)", then click Next. If you see the "The wizard did not find any new hardware on your computer", go ahead and click Next. If you see a list of hardware that you can install, select Printers, and then click Next. In the "Use existing port", select "FILE: (Print to File)", then go ahead and click Next. Select Microsoft as the manufacturer in the left column. Look for "Microsoft XPS Document Writer v4" or of similar fare, XPS Class Driver should be left alone, then click Next. You can then use the driver that is currently installed, so click Next again. Go ahead and click Finish.

To test the functionality out, go to your web browser or QuickBooks to print out a page. It should then prompt you to save your XPS file.

Hopefully this guide should work on your end, best of luck.

Control Panel > Programs and Features > Turn Windows features on or off > enter the password to the Administrator account > Scroll down to XPS Viewer and put a check mark in the box next to it.

    Ta-da!

    Katherine,

Thanks for the information. The primary focus should now be on the Microsoft XPS Document Writer, no worries about the XPS Viewer.

In optionalfeatures, "Turn Windows features on or off", try to uncheck the Microsoft XPS Document Writer, then click OK. Do not restart. Go back to optionalfeatures, check it again, and click OK. Now you can restart. I've removed the Microsoft XPS Document Writer myself from Printers & scanners, and I'm going to test my method out.

If you're unsure of what optionalfeatures is, you can look it up in the Start menu by typing it in.

Let me know of what happens, I'll perform a restart myself and see if anything changes.
