Word / Excel crashes when trying to open Add-ins box

Hi!

when I open "Options" in Word and then click "Add-ins" I keep getting the message that Microsoft program has stopped working. Two options appear:

  1. Check online for solution and close the program - this option doesn't work, it immediately closes the program and doesn't even open the browser.
  2. Close the program.

I've checked that the same thing happens with Excel. So I guess it's a problem with Microsoft Office package.

My system is Windows 7. I use Microsoft Office 2016. I want to install EndNote add-in to Word.

I will be very grateful for your help!

Best regards,

ST

Hi! I was having this same problem so I called EndNote tech support. They said Word and EndNote freak out when there is an old version of Internet Explorer running. The tech suggested I update my Internet Explorer (even though I literally never use it) and try it again. Sure enough, it works now! I did have to turn that add-in on twice and restart Word before it would work but it did eventually work.

The bug is probably due to the fact that Internet Explorer is the same system that manages the files on your computer. Since Endnote relies on lots of files if IE is out of date, it has trouble. Hope this gets it working again.

Sounds like an issue for the vendors of EndNote.

It seems like that issue is still not resolved, there are so may post about it but still no fix. You may want to check for updates for Office 2016 very often, or send them feedback, just type feedback on the search box and select feedback hub.

    Regards,

    Hello,

thank you for your reply. Unfortunately it didn't help. It seems that there's a compability problem between Microsoft Office 2016 and EndNote 18 (X8).

When I remove EndNote add-in plugin, I can access "Add-ins" box. But I can't access it when EndNote plugin is installed.

I tried to re-install Microsoft Office. As long as I re-install it and don't sign in with my Micorosoft account, I can access "Add-ins" box, install EndNote add-in and see it in Word ribbon. But after signing in to Microsoft account, it disappears and Word crashes when I try to access "Add-ins" box.

I'm still trying to figure this out. I searched online for more answers and it seems that there are more people who have the problem with Microsoft Office 2016 and EndNote plugin.

    Best regards,

    Sylwia

    Hi,

To help you resolve this concern, please update Office 2016 by following these steps:

    1. Right-click the Start button   (lower-left corner), and select Programs and Features on the pop-up menu.
    2. Right-click the Microsoft Office product you want to repair, and select Change.
    3. From the How would you like to repair your Office Programs screen, select Online Repair to make sure everything gets fixed, and then select Repair. The Quick Repair option is also available, which runs faster but only detects and then replaces corrupted files.
    4. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete.

Let us know if you need further help.
