why was the new version of Edge browser placed on my pc without prior notification?

I did not request the new version of Edge, and do not want it, yet it was installed as a standard windows 10 automatic update.

If this was mandatory I should have been informed.  I do not want it.  Can it be uninstalled easily?

    Hello klaro,

I'm John an Independent Advisor and a Microsoft user like you. I want to apologize if you encountered this issue. I understand you have a problem with new Edge suddenly installed on your pc. Microsoft begun rolling out the New Edge browser automatically via Windows Update to customers using Windows 10 1803 or later.

You can refer to this article about the details

    https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/microsoft...

You can check in Apps and Features

Press Start then search Apps and Features

Find New Edge on the list

    Click then Uninstall

If it's greyed out then it was installed via Windows Update

Unfortunately, You cannot uninstall the New Edge Chromium if it's installed via Windows update. The new Microsoft Edge does not support the removal of this update.

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/455930...

You can remove the New Edge by performing a System Restore on an earlier date before the New Edge got installed.

    Press Start

Search for Create a restore point, and click the top result to open the System Properties experience.

    Click the System Restore button.

Choose a different restore point. Click the Next button.

Select the restore point that you want to use on your computer. You can check the box "Show more restore points"

    Click Next then Finish

I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any further concerns.

    Sincerely

    John DeV

Thanks for your help, John.  The new Edge version was indeed installed as an automatic update and cannot be removed.  I shall see if I can live with it or follow your 'restore' instructions later.   I was bothered mostly by the fact that notification was not received that the update was anything but the usual windows update that seem to occur monthly.  Nothing described the update until I checked it too late to be stopped.  Because I am an old 'dyed in the wool' user of IE11 as default browser I don't use Edge but to access one email server so I'll probably just leave it alone as always.  Thanks, again for your excellent response and help.

Let me get this straight...so Microsoft quit ALL support for Windows 7 months ago (including the much needed security updates) but now feels free to push download and install a new application on our "Unsupported" Windows 7 machines that we don't want or need without even asking us on? I hope there is a law against this and someone with more time and money takes up Microsoft on this invasion in the courts!!!

Of course it isn't against the law for Microsoft to do something that you gave them permission to do (remember those terms and conditions you agree to?).

They are replacing IE and systems, including Windows 7, 8, and 10 on systems.

So either enjoy Edge and learn how to use it, or install your own preferred browser and make that one the default.
