Numbers in headings disappear

I created a checklist a couple of years back. All items in that checklist are automatically numbered. Maybe 3 weeks ago, the numbering suddenly disappeared after opening the document a couple of times and by different people. If I check the version history, only the original file has the numbers, but I know for sure, that I saw the numbers afterwards as well. Somehow, the numbering can't be fixed. Word is refusing to renumber all items again.
