Restore from iOS Backup removes management profile

Hi,

I'm trying to restore a backup with Quick Transfer on an iOS Device.

My company is giving an employee a new iPhone for work and personal use, and the user wants to clone (aka. quick transfer) the contents from their private phone onto their new work iPhone.

Device A (the device enrolled with Apple Configurator) is a new phone.
Device B is the employees phone. This phone is not enrolled with a management profile

According to this document: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/mem/intune/enrollment/backup-restore-ios
I should be able to restore from a backup and install a management profile, as long as the backup is not from the same device. It states that enrollment should resume when the backup is complete.

What I have experienced is this:

  • I choose Restore directly from another iPhone
  • After I sign in, the Remote Management screen pops up and wants to install the profile. It looks like it installs successfully, then it starts restoring.
  • After the restore, I have to set up settings like FaceID, Passcode etc.
  • After setting up FaceID and Passcode, it prompts with the Remote Management screen once again, except this time, it doesn't say the company name like the first prompt did. It doesn't tell me to install anything, the screen just briefly pops up, then it automatically proceeds to the Welcome to your new iPhone screen.
  • Then when I go into VPN and Device Management, the management profile is not there.

Please note that I am not using Apple Business Manager (I will however look into it in the future).
I am currently using Apple Configurator and Intune to manually enroll the devices - I am not using Automated Enrollment.

Thanks in advance for the help!

@Louie Hegeler-Meile , Thanks for posting in Q&A. From your description, I know you have two iOS devices, and device A is a new device which enrolled by Apple Configurator, device B is an existing personal device without enroll. You try to use quick transfer to transfer data from device B to device A, when the transfer is over, the management profile on device A is gone. If there is any misunderstanding, feel free to let us know.

According to your description, I found that your situation is different from the one in the article.
    https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/mem/intune/enrollment/backup-restore-ios

In the above situation, we backup the enrolled device and restore it to a new device. In your scenario, it seems we back up an unenrolled device and restore it to an enrolled device. When the new device is restored from the backup, the previous management profile will be overwritten. I think this is by design.

For your situation, I suggest enrolling the new device after the restoring is finished to avoid the management profile removing.

Hope the above information can help you.

    Hi Caleb,

Thank you so much for your reply. This worked. I cannot believe the resolution was this simple.
I guess I must have misunderstood the article - thank you very much for clearing that up.

    Thank you for your help!
