I will be migrating files from an old file server to a new one. It will take a long time. I'll be using Microsoft Storage Migration Service. What's the best way to keep others from accessing and/or changing files during this long process? I don't want to change the numerous share permissions.

    Hello,

It's not clear here why you're asking to prevent access or modification of files during storage migration?
Storage Migration Service The target server can take over the identity of the source server, users and applications can access existing data without changing anything, it is important to note that the target server should not contain any production data or connecting users, as this data may be overwritten.

Hello. The reason is simply because I didn't want users to modify files on the source while the transfer is taking place. Files that are open or locked on the source server will not copy over. In my case, it took over 7 hours to migrate the files. I was able to prevent access to the source by renaming it first. After the rename, I rebooted and from that point on, no users were able to connect and lock files on the source. I then added the server to Storage Migration Service and did the transfer. I skipped the cutover phase so I could rename and change IPs myself. The project was a success.
