computer update attempts not successful

My computer tries to update and runs for hours even overnight or all day and just spins. It never stops until we turn it off. When we finally turn it off, it says it had to repair what it did and after the repair, we can use the computer. It continues to try to update attempts are never successful. What do we do?

    1) Uninstall any of these non-Microsoft software using the applicable uninstall tool:

    a) antivirus
    b) firewall
    c) drive encryption

    2) Perform an in place upgrade repair:
