Azure Files Duplicate File Behaviour

David Turner 66 Reputation points

I am potentially migrating a customer from on-prem SMB file shares and user files to Azure Files and OneDrive respectively in their existing tenant. Does anyone know how Azure Files and OneDrive handle duplicates - is there some type of single instance globally or are there any other controls such as dedupe on the back end to protect the customer from incurring extra costs?

Thanks in advance

    Hi, @David Turner
You can manually delete duplicate files in OneDrive, but please refer to the reply in this link for bulk duplicate file removal: How to remove duplicate files from Onedrive

    Hi @David Turner

Thank you for asking this question on the **Microsoft Q&A Platform. **

Azure Files (Azure) and OneDrive (Microsoft 365) are processed differently, so there is no automatic way to do a file comparison.

You will have to handle duplicate files before uploading them.

    Hope this helps!
