I have a new laptop and the stand alone Office I purchased no longer works.

Question

So Microsoft holds my documents hostage unless I purchase their software AGAIN or purchase a subscription? How has this become okay? Did I just waste my money purchasing a stand alone copy of Office a couple of years ago? Can I not do anything with it now that I've upgraded to a newer laptop?
