Snip Tool causes Yellow Border

Having an annoying issue with "Snipping Tool" whereby I just want to snip a zone, but all 3 monitors get a yellow border and the snip zone doesnt work.

Expected Result:

  • Start Snipping Tool
  • Click on "New"
  • Get Greyed area that I can select

What happens:

  • Start Snipping Tool
  • Click on "New"
  • Yellow border on all monitors and cannot select the area to 'snip'

This is highly annoying. Once the yellow borders appears I have to:

  • Either wait 10s+
  • Click on "new" 1-3 more times as it loses focus each time
  • Keep pressing ESC hoping that the Yellow border disappears

I dont have any recording devices like a Webcam (its a desktop and removed) or screen capture.

This can be consistently replicated at least on my Desktop as I need Snipping Tool to capture parts of things to be embedded in emails. However this does not appear to be an issue when I use WIN + SHIFT + S key - although I cannot use this all the time as I need to draw lines to explain things.

Windows 11 21H2 22000.1219 - this has been an issue for the last year and its gets annoying!

My problem is probably not exactly the same but snipping tool causes a lingering yellow border and closing the program, even resetting it, doesn't help.

    Restarting windows explorer fixes it.

    • Restart Explorer: In Task Manager, find "Windows Explorer," right-click it, and select Restart.

I was not only seeing the yellow border problem in Snip & Sketch, I was also seeing 60 second plus delays in bringing up Windows Explorer. I discovered that indexing has been turned off for some reason, and after turning it back on, both my Explorer problem and Snip & Sketch were back to normal. My guess is that with indexing off, there are delays that adversely impact both tools.

    1. Disable "Show snip outline":

    Open the Snipping Tool.

In the top right corner, click the three dots "..." to open the settings menu.

Uncheck the "Show snip outline" option.

    Restart the Snipping Tool.

    1. Turn off "Screen overlay when Snipping Tool is active":

Go to Settings > Accessibility > Narrator.

    Ensure Narrator is turned off.

If Narrator is already off, check if the "Show screen overlay when Snipping Tool is active" option is enabled under Settings > System > Multitasking. If it is, disable it.
