Hi,

We are reviewing our MS License as vendor asks for Number of CPU and Number of Cores per CPU.

On the other hand, from Task Manager, we get the information about Sockets / Cores and Logical Processors.

For a particular physical server, we get the following information

  1. Number of Sockets - 2
  2. Number of Cores - 12
  3. Number of Logical Processors - 12

Does it mean that there are 2 CPU and each of them gets 6 Cores ? If it is correct, we only need to get MS License for 12 Cores.

Thanks

    Probably is correct at 12 cores. You could also run msinfo32 to get more detailed info. As to licensing;

    Some general info

    • Each host needs to be licensed.
    • A minimum of 8 core licenses is required for each physical processor and a minimum of 16 core licenses is required for each server.
    • Core licenses are sold in packs of two.
    • Standard Edition provides rights for up to 2 Operating System Environments or Windows Servers containers with Hyper-V isolation when all physical cores in the server are licensed. For each additional 1 or 2 VMs, all the physical cores in the server must be licensed again.
    • DataCenter Edition provides rights for unlimited Operating System Environments or Windows Servers containers with Hyper-V isolation when all physical cores in the server are licensed.
