How to update from Windows 11 21h2 to 24h2

Question

My pc is running Windows 11 21h2. Since 24h2 was just released, how do I update from my current version to the new one? I've checked for updates via my Windows settings and there is none. Do I just wait for it to get to me? Or is there any way to do the update manually?

my problem was a solved differently but i was on version 22H2. i was able to follow this guide to update to 24H2:

Force Windows 11 24H2 update:

• Go to search and type Group Policy or press Win + R and type gpedit.msc
• Computer Configuration > Administrative Template > Windows Components > Windows Update (double click) > Manage updates offered from Windows Update (double click)
• Select when Preview builds and Feature updates are received (double click)
• Select Enable
• Hit apply and ok
• Restart your PC or Open Terminal as Administrator > type gpupdate /force hit enter
• Go to settings and Check for updates

i am so very confused by this..... i have never had to do anything like this to update. the worse i had was windows 10, i just had to go down a version and reinstall....

Hi, I am Dave, I will help you with this.

Microsoft are slowly releasing version 24H2 around the world, they monitor that update and when problems are reported, they patch the update and then release it to a wider selection of hardware, currently there are some blocks on some hardware configurations like some Asus laptop models and PC's with WD or Sandisk SSD drives.

If your system is still on version 21H2, that is a very old version of Windows 11, you seem to be missing a lot of updates, including 23H2, is there no other large updates listed in your updates section in the settings app?

If you want to manually install version 24H2, the most successful method is to use the Windows 11 ISO to perform an in-place upgrade.

Please follow the steps, this is then not like re-installing Windows, it is just like an update and your personal files, settings and installed software will not be affected.

When the ISO file completes downloading

Disconnect from the Internet

Disconnect all external devices with the exception of a mouse or keyboard.

Temporarily disable any 3rd party Anti-virus you may have installed

Then, in Windows File Explorer, double click the ISO and then run Setup.exe and select the Install option.

When I tried to download the ISO file I got this error:

Since my PC doesn't have a dvd tray I couldn't download to a DVD.

Also, I do not have any updates pending via Windows update. The last update it did download last month was:

KB5001716: Update for Windows Update Service components

Before that the latest update went back to Oct 2023.

If you are getting that error trying to directly donwload the Windows 11 ISO, use the middle option on that web page to donwlaod the Media Creation Tool, then use that tool to create the Windows 11 ISO, not a USB.
