Our company wanted to enable online archive and retention policy. Email will move to online archive after 5 years. Then email will be deleted after 'stay in online archive' after 1 year. So user have 1 year before email will be deleted permanently.

I wanted to know whether retention tag use 'date email received' or 'date when email arrive to online archive' before start deleting email permanently ? i wanted to avoid retention policy to delete email immediately when we turn on this policy for those email more than 7 years.

thanks.

There's no such thing as 'stay in online archive' or 'date when email arrive to online archive', the only type of tag you can use for this scenario is message created/received date. Refer to the official documentation for more info: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/exchange/security-and-compliance/messaging-records-management/retention-age
