I have a MS Server 2019 Standard as a domain server with two VMs. One of the VMs is running WSUS. I want to move the WSUS to a separate PC as its not ideal for updates and my question is, would I need a fresh copy of MS 2019 Server for the new PC just to run WSUS or can I install the existing copy used on the domain server or the VM? In other words do I have to purchase a new copy of windows server just for WSUS? Your help is appreciated.

    Some general info

    • Each host needs to be licensed.
    • A minimum of 8 core licenses is required for each physical processor and a minimum of 16 core licenses is required for each server.
    • Core licenses are sold in packs of two.
    • Standard Edition provides rights for up to 2 Operating System Environments or Windows Servers containers with Hyper-V isolation when all physical cores in the server are licensed. For each additional 1 or 2 VMs, all the physical cores in the server must be licensed again.
    • DataCenter Edition provides rights for unlimited Operating System Environments or Windows Servers containers with Hyper-V isolation when all physical cores in the server are licensed.

So yes, you can move the virtual machine to a new host, but the host will need to be licensed as above.

Our Dell server hardware has 20-cores and the second PC I want to move the WSUS to is a standard i5 Intel processor with 4-cores. So I thought this should be fine.

Not sure what is meant but each host needs to be licensed.
