is it necessary to give certificate to exchange POP server and SMTP authentication

hi friends,

i would like to configure POP and smtp from my EX2016 server, i noticed that the help doc recommends to use certificate for POP and smtp, while i have not public certificate for my server, is it possible to configure it without certificate.

    If you want to configure the authenticated SMTP settings for POP3, a certificate is required. Microsoft suggests using a certificate from a commercial certification authority, because all clients, devices, and servers automatically trust the certificates, which Simplified certificate deployment.

    However, if you don't have a 3rd party certificate, you could also consider using the Certificate issued by an internal CA, which is free and also the supported way. Only note that: the certificate isn't automatically trusted by client computers and mobile devices. The certificate needs to be manually added to the trusted root certificate store on all client computers and devices.
