AADConnect V1.x may stop working on December 31st, due to the retirement of the ADAL library service on that date.

Hi, Is it possible to advise technically what happens when ADAL library service is retired. There is a bit of confusion about the distinction between what it actually means to say retired or depreciated. Trying to assess whether an upgrade to AD connect v2.x can happen in January, as there is a change freeze until then. If retired means it actively may stop working, or it is just not supported but should still function?

@Nicholas Jenkin Thank you for reaching out to us, hope this answers your query:

ADAL Authentication Library gets deprecated in December 2022, older Azure AD connect v1.x versions will be unable to authenticate against Azure AD, meaning synchronization with Azure AD will stop working.

well, it really means it may keep working but there is no guarantee it may stope working at any time.
Technically AADConnect Version 1 is no longer supported since August 31st of this year.

I was really looking for a technical answer about what actually happens on the 31st but it doesn't seem to be any way to get any real techincal detail on it unfortunately, so it is a case of weighing the risk of making a risky change during a change freeze where there is skeleton staff against the risk it stops working during January when there is resource to take action to resolve.

According to this, ADAL apps will continue to work:
