Journalling Question

In Exchange you can journal at the database level, so under database and maintenance, add in a journal email address.
But you can also set up a journal rule under Compliance Management, journal rules.

Does anyone know why there are 2 options, and what the differences are between them?

And what happens if both are enabled?

Thanks all

Kevin

Its really a difference between scoping to a specific database mailboxes ( standard) and being able to scope to recipients (Premium)

    Premium requires Enterprise CALs.

You wouldnt enable both simply because if you have Enterprise CALs, then use Premium, if not enable per database with Standard.

If both were enabled, you may see some duplication in the journaling maibox.

Thank you for your answer, I understand where you are coming from with your answer and the article.
I think that your information has enabled me to work out what is happening. As there is an address used for the mailbox journalling but this goes to an address that is configured as a send connector to an external system to capture the emails.

So in this case having both on would not duplicate the journal mailbox, but having both is a waste of time. I think I can now understand the benefits, because you could place people in to a database who you don't want to journal, and have some in a database you do.

    Thanks.
