Can we use a single storage account from west and east region VMs?

Hi,

In AWS, we can use a single S3 bucket to store data from both east and west region account EC2 instances. Do we have the similar mechanism available in Azure also? Can we use a single storage account to write/read/update/delete contents from both east and east region VMs? If possible, what should be the redundancy configuration set for storage account?

I am not sure what is the exact configuration for an S3 Bucket, but this is the documentation about Azure Storage redundancy

The short answer is yes you can use a storage account cross-region. The issue can be latency.

If possible, what should be the redundancy configuration set for storage account?

@Carlos Solís Salazar Thanks for the prompt response.

In AWS, I am using a single S3 bucket for uploading data from both east and west region EC2 instances at same time.

Based on my understanding, the Azure supports GRS or GZRS redundancy for the storage account and we can configure read access for the secondary region using RA-GRS or RA-GZRS. With that configuration, I believe we can not do write action from secondary region util failover occurs.

Not sure if there is any configuration available for Azure storage account to enable write action from both primary and secondary region (active-active) at the same time. Could you please confirm?

@Mohan, Anoop the storage redundancy will help with the availability time,

You can have a Storage Account in EastUS and your resources in WestUS can access the data of the storage account.

The GRS or GZRS redundancy it happening in the background, for your applications always will be the same URL

Agreed that the EastUS and WestUS region resources can access the same storage account. Hope, that is not only the read access.
I just wanted to double check if both regions will always (not only the failover time) have the WRITE access to the same storage account. Please confirm.

@Mohan, Anoop No, you cannot write simultaneously in two regions for a Storage Account.

However, you can access a Storage Account from multiple regions.

So based on your comment what I understood is, if we have a storage account with GRS or GZRS redundancy in WestUS region

The WestUS resources will have write access to that storage account

EastUS resources will have read access to that storage account.

But, both WestUS and EastUS region resources can not write data to that storage account simultaneously.

Could you please confirm, if there is any other storage mechanism in Azure, that support simultaneously write access from multiple regions (like AWS S3 bucket)?

I'm not sure if exists one Storage option which fulfills your requirement.
