the driver is free, but the client needs a license to access the sqlserver. this will depend on the server edition installed, and licensing choices.

The driver is free, and the fee is for the Standard and Enterprise editions of SQL Server. You can use the latest Microsoft® ODBC Driver 18 and it is compatible with some previous versions of SQL Server. Please see this: SQL version compatibility
