Moving from DPM 2012R2 to DPM 2022 and new hardware

I am currently running DPM 2012R2 on Server 2012r2 and I want to replace the hardware and move to latest 2022 DPM and Server 2022.
I have found advice on upgrading the OS, SQL and DPM, but not really anything that covers what I want to do. Plus I prefer to use a new clean install of OS and DPM, rather than upgrading DPM, SQL and OS.
Is the upgrade path the only way to get the DPM DB to come through? i.e. keep existing tapes useful? If so, what if I, in order to keep the existing DPM server intact (I take it offline), Disk2vhd it to a VM and run through the upgrade process on that to get the 'required DPMDB backup' to restore on a new Server?

I have seen comment that it needs to be a DPM upgrade (rather than new install) to get it to use the old DPMDB. If that is the case, how would one replace DPM hardware after a failure?
Regards
Phil
