Data from ODBC Data Source in Excel Add-In

Is it possible to retrieve data from an ODBC data source via an Excel Add-In. I've been playing around with a task pane add-in but have been unable to find any documentation that would point to this being a possibility. I'm guessing I can create a legacy add-in using VBA with this kind of functionality (please correct me if I'm wrong). If anyone knows if this is a possibility or if you can point me to some example code that would be great.
