Hi, we have Exchange 2016 Hybrid server running in Windows server 2012 R2 server in Virtual Enviroment (VMware). this server also has Azure AD connect V1.6 is running in this server. our Domain controller is Server 2019 in seperate server.

Question 1:

Now we could not upgrade this Azure AD connect V1.6 to V 2.0, becuase minimum requirement is Server 2016 or Serve 2019. I want to know that if I do an inplace upgrade of this server windows2012R2 to server 2016 then upgrad this server from 2016 to Server 2019. once this server is upgraded to Server 2019, can I able to update this Azure AD connect from version 1.6 to Version 2.0?

Question 2:
As I mentioned Exchange Hybrid server 2016 running this Server 2012, if I upgrade this server from windows2012 to windows 2016/2019 for AD connect, will that affect any changes to Hybrid server?

Need your suggestion to upgrade his Azure AD connect from V1.6 to V 2 and also to upgrade this windows version 2012 R2 which is going to End of support this Year,

Many Thanks

    Hi,

    Question 1:

You cannot perform a upgrade in place because Exchange and adconnect don't support the upgrade in-place.

I recommend you to perform the following steps:

    1. Install new machine with supported operating system by th target version of adconnect
    2. Export adconnect configuration settings from the old server
    3. On this new server, install adconnect server in staging mode (don't forget to import settings exported from old server)
    4. Move the old adconnect server to staging mode
    5. Disable the staging mode on new adconnect server
    6. Remove adconnect server from old server.

    Question 2:

No impact on your hybrid environment ,if you follow my suggestion, because you will keep the same adconnect configuration.

    Hello there,

Note that you must not be running in Azure while you are planning for an in-place upgrade of servers.

    More information here https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/get-started/upgrade-overview#which-version-of-windows-server-should-i-upgrade-to

You can upgrade to a newer version of Windows Server by up to two versions at a time. For example, Windows Server 2016 can be upgraded to Windows Server 2019 or Windows Server 2022.

Azure AD Connect must be installed on a domain-joined Windows Server 2016 or later - note that Windows Server 2022 is not yet supported. You can deploy Azure AD Connect on Windows Server 2016 but since Windows Server 2016 is in extended support, you may require a paid support program if you require support for this configuration. We recommend the usage of domain-joined Windows Server 2019.

Hope this resolves your Query !!
