SCCM Hardware move

We plan to move our existing SCCM Primary Site (current branch 2203), remote SQL Server, and DP's (Server 2012) to new OS (Server 2022) and hardware. An in-place upgrade is not an option for us. The plan we have so far is

  1. Move the SQL Server to the new OS and perform site maintenance or reset this option onto the existing Primary Site server (Server 2012).

Moving the ConfigMgr Current Branch database to another server (as in back to the primary site server) - Deployment Research

  1. After the SQL move and wait for a week and then move the Primary Site server to new hardware (Server 2022).

ConfigMgr Site Backup and Restore - MEM For the Win! (memftw.com)

  1. Add new DP’s to the new Server and start the distribution. Remove the old DP’s and decommission them

Few questions :

  1. Does it sound a better option or should we do the DP's first even before we upgrade the remote SQL and Primary Site Server?
  2. When moving the SQL Server to new OS (as a first step), do we install the same version of SQL that we have currently or just go with the latest supported version of SQL on the new hardware?
  3. Any other things that we need to consider?

Appreciate your help!!

Thanks

    Hi @VinodProsk

Does it sound a better option or should we do the DP's first even before we upgrade the remote SQL and Primary Site Server?

1, You can remove these DP at any time if you have planned to stop using them. However, please do not remove the DP Installed on the primary site before you migrate the SCCM. Because at least one DP exists in our environment.

When moving the SQL Server to new OS (as a first step), do we install the same version of SQL that we have currently or just go with the latest supported version of SQL on the new hardware?

2, As mentioned in the article you provided, I also recommend that you restore the backup file to the same version of SQL Server, and then upgrade the SQL server. Because it is possible that the database schema for the system databases changed across server builds.

The related article for your reference:

You cannot restore system database backups to a different build of SQL Server - Microsoft Support

3, For ConfigMgr Site Backup and Restore, many important points are included in the article you provided. However, I still recommend that you refer these official documents together.

    https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/mem/configmgr/core/servers/manage/backup-and-recovery

    https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/mem/configmgr/core/servers/manage/recover-sites

    Thanks for your time!

    Best regards,
    Cherry
