Why am I being placed in the wrong directory?

I log into the portal and I cannot view any of my resources. I am told that I am "not a member of this tenant". It looks like the directory I have been "placed" in is incorrect, since its name is not the same as my Azure subscription ID. I suspect this is happening because I was studying some of the Azure learning modules and made some brief use of the short-term resources they provide for learning. This being the case, possibly, I cleared my browser cache but it did not make any difference. I am unable to switch to another directory because Azure cannot find another one that I have access to. I have been a regular user of Azure service for almost a year now, and suddenly, I cannot access my resources. Any ideas?
