AADSTS140000: Request nonce is expired - how to fix

I have a user in my organization (the Executive Director, of all people) who continually gets AADSTS140000: Request nonce is expired error when signing into the Outlook desktop client (not the web app). We are using Office 2019 desktop apps and have Office365 A1 for faculty licenses in my organization.

When this happens, Office applications hang and stop responding when trying to save documents. Usually, restarting the computer will clear the error, but when they go to sign in the next day, the error reappears for them. I've been unable to find any documentation that explains how to clear this error.

I've looked in our Windows Server Active Directory, Azure AD, Microsoft Admin Center and everything with the user account looks to be ok. How do I resolve this issue this one user is having?

    Hi @Tony Lucarelli ,

When this happens, Office applications hang and stop responding when trying to save documents.

Corruption of the cache file may be one of the causes of the problem, it is recommended you try the following troubleshooting:

If above doesn't help, try to create a new profile and see if the issue continues:

Go to Control Panel > Mail > Show Profiles > Add, then re-add the account.

A user contacted me about this error yesterday, according to her it started after I moved her laptop last week to another office/desk so it might be network related.

When I get hold of her, I will try to empty the outlook cache folder, repair Office and then create a new profile in Outlook.

    Full error msg:

Message: AADSTS140000: Request nonce is expired. Current time: 2023-02-13T08:20:41.4401720Z, expiry time of assertion 2023-02-13T08:10:34.2575506Z.

    Edit:

Remotely controlled the customer's computer and completed the steps described above, chose to run quick repair in Office. Asked the user to call me if the error occurs again.
