Login Loop setting up email through Outlook on Android

I am currently stuck in a login loop with Microsoft on an Android device. I have tried with and without the Authenticator and it makes no difference.
I want to setup my gmail in Outlook on my Android device but as soon as I enter my login details for Microsoft account it puts me in a continuous loop where it is either asking me for my password or for the approval through the authenticator and I even tried via email but it just takes me round and round.
I have tried removing the authenticar as suggested in 1 forum, that made no difference.
Has anyone got any idea why I am stuck in this never ending loop and how do I get out of it?
The steps
- Add account
- Select my gmail account hit continue
- Enter my microsoft password - Hit sign in
- Asked to approve request on the same device, which I do
- Back to step 3
Occasionally I will get error 1001
which gives me
