HYPERV live migration between 2 differents intel processor failed

Hello,

I have a cluster with 4 hyper V.

I have 2 servers with a GenuineIntel Intel64 Family 6 Model 85 Stepping 4 processor,

and the 2 others with GenuineIntel Intel64 Family 6 Model 85 Stepping 7 processor.

Since i migrated my hyperV servers from 2016 to 2019, the live migration between the servers with differents processors failed. (error 21502).

The compatibility box is checked.

I would like some help.

    HPE got back to me; known issue they are working on it.

    How long this issue is known and when to expect a solution (if any) remains unknown.

    Hello Matthieu,

    we had exact the same problem with the same processors (Intel Xeon 8180 and 8280)

    HPE 4 node hyper-v cluster DL560 gen10.

    we had a call with microsoft and they said the problem comes from the bios/firmware.

    After a call with HPE we forced a downgrade from the bios/firmware to an older version (2.54) from 2019.

    and now the live migration problem is fixed.

    Maybe you installed also a newer bios/firmware with the installation from server 2016 to 2019?

    I may have the beginning of an answer.

    I performed several tests, and my thoughts are going to CPU functionnalities exposure, especially those concerning Spectre, Meltdown and all these vulnerabilities.

    I installed a fifth server with a Gold Xeon, and experience the same issue as with two other ones I administrate : if a VM has started one one of the hosts with more recent CPUs, it can't live migrate to the ones with older gen Xeons.

    Comparing the CPU functionnalities exposed to the VM, according to the host it stared on, and with CPU compatibility on and the off revealed that the functionnalities missing are the SPectre/Meltdown remediation ones.

    My hypothesis is that older CPU had to be fixed from these vulnerabilities, but more recent ones are natively protected against them, causing a gap on CPU functionnality exposure to the VM between older and newer CPUs on hosts.

    I opened a case at HPE (my servers are all from them), I'll share what they will tell.

    Even if I think they will ask to downgrade BIOS to a pré Spectre version, which is not acceptable from a security prospective.

    It appears that you are having difficulty performing a live migration between the servers with different GenuineIntel Intel64 Family 6 Model 85 processors. This is likely due to the fact that the two processors have different stepping numbers (4 vs. 7). Since the two processors are not completely compatible, the live migration will fail. To work around this issue, you may be able to enable processor compatibility mode in the Hyper-V settings. This will allow the live migration to go through, but with a potential performance penalty. Alternatively, you can try using a third-party tool such as Microsoft Virtual Machine Converter to perform the migration.
