VM located in US backing up to East Asia through MARS agent

HI, i have a VM located in the US and currently being backed up using MARS agent, however the location of the services vault is in East Asia. The internet speed of the VM is good, around 120Mbps (download) and 477Mbps (upload). However I noticed its taking so slow to backup this machine to Azure. Is it possible that its because of the location of the VM vs the location of services vault?

Short answer - YES!

The reason for slowness is definitely region as you are sending data across continents.

Is there a charge in transferring or changing the vault location? What would be the best solution here.

Moving Recovery Services vaults for Azure Backup across Azure regions isn't supported.

You can stop protection and retain backup data for MARS as well. See the instructions here -

@Carlos Solis Salazar Hello. I've already checked the guide and the only item with issue is on the backup jobs completing with warning, which has 0x800700b7 and 0x80070002 error codes. Not sure if excluding them is okay since those files are part of the system. Also, does it have to do with the slowness? Basically, jobs are successfully completing, its just that they are taking too long to finish overlapping the other job.

Also going back to my original question, is it a factor that the data source (VM) is residing on the US and its being backup on recovery services vault in East Asia region? Thank you.

Hello @Carlos Solis Salazar , the only item here with issue is the backup with warnings which has codes 0x80070002 and 0x800700b7. But im not sure if excluding them is okay because those files are part of the system (.dll files). Also, my issue is slow backing up. So going back to my question, is it a factor that the VM resides in the US while being backed up in a recovery services vault in Eas Asis location? Thank you

For an Azure VM, you can stop protection with retain data for the VM in the old vault, move the VM to another resource group, and then protect the VM in the new vault. See guidance and limitations for moving a VM to another resource group.

Note: If you choose to retain data in the old vaults, you will incur backup charges accordingly.
