I am getting a message that it will no longer be available after April 12th. Do I have to subscribe to keep records such as previous contact file records?

Yes. Once the classic version expires, it cannot be used. You will have two options: one is to upgrade directly to paid, which will keep the previous data; The other is to use Teams for free, which is re-enabled, and all previous records will not be retained.
