Junk email folder moved to other subfolder, how to repair?

One of our users called that her Junk email folder had disappeared in the Outlook client, but still visible in OWA. After some searching I retrieved the folder under the Notes folder:

Identity: <username>@<domain>.nl\Notities\Ongewenste e-mail

Name: Ongewenste e-mail

(Dutch, translated: Notes\Unwanted e-mail)

Whatever I try, there is no option to move the Junk email folder.

What have I tried:

  • Made myself Owner of the mailbox (with consent): No way to move or delete.
  • Created new Outlook profile without caching: No option to move or delete the folder
  • Opened Outlook with "Outlook /resetfolders".
  • Ran MFCMapi.exe and removed the folder: No change, just re-appears under Notes.
  • Disabled and re-Enabled JunkEmailconfiguration with PowerShell:
    Set-MailboxJunkEmailConfiguration -Identity $User -Enabled $false
    Set-MailboxJunkEmailConfiguration -Identity $User -Enabled $true.

Now I ran out of options, hopefully someone here has the solution?

    Hi @Ron ,

After some searching, I retrieved the folder under the Notes folder:

What's the version of the Outlook client? The build information can be found via File > Office Account > About Outlook.
Are you able to see the Junk email folder in Outlook if switching to the Folder list (Ctrl+6)?
    1

Note: If you are using the new Outlook for Windows, you may need to manually select Folder from the left pane:
    User's image

If yes, please follow the steps below and see if it can make any difference:

    1. Right click the Junk email folder, choose "Properties".
    2. Make sure the type below is set to "IPM.Post":
      3
    3. If it's not set as "IPM.Post" and you find it impossible to change the type using the drop-down list next to it, please open MFCMAPI, expand IPM_SUBTREE, locate Junk Email folder, change the value of "PR_CONTAINER_CLASS" to "IPF.Note":
      4

Any update, feel free to post back.

I'd be curious if you delete that folder with mfcmapi and then move the mailbox to another database it that fixes it.

    Hi @Ron ,

Just came across this thread which discussed an issue that the Junk E-mail folder got moved as a subfolder under Deleted Items. The solution there was to soft delete the Junk email folder using MFCMAPI.

Did you happen to select the hard delete option when attempting to delete the folder previously? If yes, maybe you can try soft delete it and check the result

    Hi @Ron ,

Ran into the following article which could help restore the location of the default Junk email folder:
Method 5: Restore the location of the Junk Email folder by using MFCMAPI

Perhaps you can give it a shot if you are still looking for help on this issue.
