e-mails are deleted when sharing to sharepoint

Whenever dragging and dropping emails to a sharepoint library from Outlook 365 desktop app, the cursor turns into a box and the email is moved to the deleted emails folder of Outlook. How do you share to sharepoint but keep the email in the inbox?

I have the exact same problem (very recently) almost like an update has been applied somewhere without warning.

I have read up on several fixes (mainly to do with javascript) but nothing is working and it seems like a setting which Microsoft need to disable from their end over anything we can do.

I have informed the staff to copy to desktop first or use ctrl+z for now but will be keeping my eyes peeled for a fix (and informing Microsoft support)

The "Library settings" checked out document options have no bearing on this sadly.

In our testing, this issue initially only affected users if they were using Chrome, however I've now tested again and the issue occurs in Edge too, where it didn't before.

May 9th there were updates to Office 365 and Office 2019. This issue was reported by the OP on May 4th, so I doubt the Office updates are to blame. My users drag and drop emails from Outlook to SharePoint Online all day, every day, and they did not notice this issue until this morning. So Friday, no issue, Monday morning, issue.

What version of Edge is everyone using? Assuming this issue is happening in Edge for everyone. I am noticing that we are all on Edge 113.0.1774.42, which is a update from May 11, which could definitely explain why we didnt see the issue until today.

So far I can find nothing in the release notes about this issue, whether it was a feature release or a fix.

Of course this is not very helpful...

It's doing this in both Edge and Chrome for us. I do assume it is browser related. Thankfully holding CTRL is a workable fix that I've emailed to all staff.

Version 113.0.1774.42 (Official build) (64-bit) - Edge
Version 113.0.5672.93 (Official Build) (64-bit) - Chrome

And of course drag and drop does not work in Firefox, so can't test there.

Thanks for the response! I was hoping it was browser and not Office or SharePoint. Unfortunately we do not use alternate browsers, only Edge, so I have instructed my users to keep using CTRL for the foreseeable future.

We are on Edge Version 112.0.1722.68 which appears to align with when the move to deleted items issue started.

It would appear Firefox v113 now supports drag and drop sharing from Outlook to SharePoint. Furthermore, the message isn't deleted on completion of the share action. At least for the moment.

CTRL is the most viable workaround for those who cannot install Firefox, though. A right-click drag as in file dragging in Windows Explorer doesn't work for Outlook to Edge drags, sadly.

Timing-wise, the change seems coincidentally close to the release of the new Outlook, and I suspect is also part of the path towards Microsoft's "One Outlook" vision.

Good morning! So this morning it is just working again, no moving emails to deleted items when I drag and drop them to SharePoint. Anyone seeing the same thing? No change to the version of MS Edge or Outlook. Unless an update was made to SharePoint, I am not sure what happened. My users are able to drag and drop again and I have tested it as working, also.

Yea, I suppose my SP tenant might be in the right place. I had a couple of my AP folks tell me this morning that it was working again, so i tested, then verified version numbers hadn't changed. Still no work from MS. I opened a ticket and crickets. It hasn't even been assigned to anyone yet.

I am having this exact same issue. I am working on a desktop version of Outlook and Sharepoint is online. I copy out important emails to Sharepoint all day long. How do I stop them from being automatically deleted? I tried the fixes below and holding down the Ctrl key worked so it that now something I am going to have to start doing from now on?

I opened a ticket this morning for our organisation whereby for us it was working okay last week and stopped later last week/early this week. Up until 2pm today it kept deleting the email but it's now reverted back to what it was before. Ticket hasnt been updated but am wondering as mentioned above if this is a tenancy change. If/when they update the ticket I'll feedback here.

We experienced this change of behaviour aswell. But today after trying to describe some steps to reproduce it seems that this is again working as expected without any changes from our side. I could drag and drop an email to a sharepoint site and the email remains in the Outlook Inbox. I couldn't find any information about this change but it seems to be working again.

Is anyone still experiencing this issue? I still have not heard from MS on the ticket I opened. Not even a tech assigned. Oh wait, a tech was assigned. I opened the ticket at 1:08pm on May 16, and I have not heard from them at all, not one email or phone call. That is not normal.

The engineer for my case rang late Friday (after I finished work) but sent a follow up email saying holding CTRL was the expected behaviour. Replied this morning to explain it's back to as it was, but want confirmation from them that the expected behaviour isnt going to be one they implement again without warning and if it is to point me in the direction of the article that describes this change.

Exactly! I don't mind most changes, as long as they are warning/informing us of them beforehand. There has to be a changelog somewhere detailing this change. You can't tell me an org as large as MS is just making whimsical changes whenever it wants, there has to be a change request and a process to test and approve it. Show me the article.

We had the same issue on our tennant, it was resolved just as I had tech support on the line. There is still a single user reporting the issue now though. All other users using chrome / edge Office365/Office2016 stopped having the issue. Is anyone still experiencing this that you know off?

It's also the new default behaviour when dragging a e-mail message from Outlook desktop to a channel in Teams Desktopapp.
Right-button-dragging isn't working in this combination of Outlook and Teams. And if you want to share e-mail information with your Team, most colleages want to keep the message in the inbox as well.

If you hold Ctrl before you start dragging from Outlook to Share Point, it will create a copy rather than move the email. This resolved it for me.

Is there any permanent fix on this? Is this also browser-related issue or really just a bug from Microsoft's side?

We are experiencing the same issue. It works fine for any SharePoint folder that it's synced to your desktop and then drag and drop via your file explorer but not the web browser.

I've opened a ticket at Microsoft. Maybe some others should too to raise awareness. Refer to the support case 2305161420001201 and this thread in the ticket, so they will see it's an issue affecting multiple users.

I found this only to be an issue when using the web part Document Library, if you use the Document Library itself then you can copy fine.

I have the same problem. If the classic view is used, the Outlook message is not deleted when it is dragged

What is considered 'classic view' in Outlook 365? I've tried a few different views and the email still gets sent to deleted items.

hi @SHampton ,

@Carlos LLinás is refering to using a SharePoint Library in the classic view. Which is available via the link underneath the menu in SharePoint.

The same as using the CTRL-button, this is only a workaround for a very annoying situation.
