How to prevent and track accidental deletion of mailbox folders

Alfie dela Cruz 0 Reputation points

Aside folder-level permission, is there any other way to prevent accidental deletion of mailbox folder.

Also, upon checking mailbox auditing logs, it does not log folder deletion. Also, it does not log the Soft Deletion of more that 10 mail items with long subject line.

We encountered an incident that deleted a whole mailbox folder with around 50+ mail items. This was not logged in mailbox audit. Is there a way to configure to not log subject line when 10 or more mail items are deleted?

    Hi Alfie dela Cruz,

Could you please tell me if you are using exchange online or Exchange On-premises.

Unfortunately, there is currently no other way to prevent mailbox folders from being accidentally deleted.

But in order to prevent emails from being accidentally deleted, you can also enable In-Place Hold or Litigation Hold for your mailbox.

When Litigation Hold is enabled, all mailbox all items are placed on hold. In contrast, you can use an In-Place Hold to preserve only those items that meet that the criteria of a search query that you define by using the In-Place eDiscovery tool.

Items on hold will remain in the Recover deleted items folder even if they are deleted.
