Hi Experts,

Hope you guys are doing well.

Yesterday. I have messed with one of disks data in Azure Cloud VM. Finally it was deleted mistakenly.

how can i restore deleted disks data?

Could you please advice easiest way to restore the disks data in Azure Cloud VM?

Hi,

Did you back up of the deleted disk?

If you deleted the data disk (and not just detached it) you will need to restore from backup. For example, if the disk was backed up using Azure Backup you can restore it. If you did not back up the deleted data disk then it is gone.

I didn't have any backup for files or disk.

I'm not sure about Azure backup? is this azure backup is automatically takes backup or need to setup earlier?

Can Azure VM's technical help to restore deleted data from restore points?

You first have to enable Azure Backup for the VM and then it will perform back ups automatically. If you didn't set it to back up the VM then it wouldn't have backed up the disks.

Are you sure you deleted the data disk and not just detached it from a VM? Unfortunately deleting a disk is non-recoverable (except for restoring from some sort of backup/copy). Please look in the resource group where the disk was located to see if it still exists.

I have checked multiple times i do not have backup files.

Is there anyway to restore entire VM to some Point in time restore options like we do in windows laptop?

whom should i contact restore VM to previous days?

Please advice.

Hi TP,

Disk is present and i have messed up with some data i.e. one of my very important folder was deleted mistakenly.

disk is in healthy state and having other data's in it. i just need to recover my one folder data.

Please advice. is there any way in azure cloud VM?

Are shadow copies enabled on the volume? If yes, what you can do is right-click on the drive in File Explorer, on Previous Versions tab, select a version from before the problem and then click Open.

Once it opens in a new window you can copy the folder you are interested in and paste it where you need it (a regular file explorer window with current version of contents.)

The above is inside of windows connected via Remote Desktop, with the disk attached.

Thanks for quick solution. Unfortunately There was no Shadow copy setup for the disk so that i cant have backup.

I have setup now. wont have problem in future issues. :)

No, unfortunately that's what Azure Backup and/or snapshots and/or similar third-party solutions are for. Think of your backup/restore strategy in layers--shadow copy is very useful, but don't depend on it for all cases. Use Azure Backup as well if this is critical VM in case the shadow copies are deleted/corrupt for some reason, ransomware infection, etc.

If files/folders were deleted and not much write activity has occurred since you may be able to recover some files by running third-party file recovery program. I don't have a specific program to recommend.
