When I modify Salesperson code for customers by editing Business Central using Excel, it deletes customer data. Is this a bug?

When I need to make mass updates to Salesperson code across Customers in Business Central using the BC Excel add in, when changes are published, customer data drops off in business central. Specifically contacts and Customer names clear.
Why is this? Is this a bug or does something need to be done prior to editing salesperson code data?
