Hello good day, new user here. Does anyone know how to fix the lag when using RDP? My signal is strong but when I'm on RDP there's a delay or lag, it takes 5 to 10 seconds By the way right now my subscription is still free. Please help me how to fix RDP lag. Thank you

Hello, @Danice Goldi ! If your internet connection is good, you probably need to increase the size of your VM so it has the computing power needed to run an OS, applications and RDP. I'd be happy to elaborate, @Danice Goldi.

Increase your VM size: I'll start with this as I think this may be the root of your issue. To increase your VM size using the portal, you just need to:

Go to the Azure portal.

Open the page for the virtual machine.

In the left menu, select "Size".

Pick a new size from the list of available sizes and then select "Resize". (So if you had a Standard_D2_v3, you might want to increase that to a Standard_D4_v3 or Standard_D8_v3.)

Make sure your VM is close to you: If I'm in West US, I would want to make sure that my VM is also in West US and not East US, or on another continent. You can read more about Azure regions and geographies here: https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/explore/global-infrastructure/geographies/#overview

Check your internet connection: This is usually the first thing you would want to do but since you said you've already done this, I'll be brief here. Even if your connection to www.microsoft.com is quick, it's a good idea to make sure that there's nothing that might be slowing your connection between the computer you are using and the VM you are trying to RDP to. Thank you very much and very well said. I get it now how to increase the VM size. But By the way right now my subscription is still free (200$) credit. Im currently using Standard_B2ms. And i have to RDP are active at this time. 2. And also how about (VM close) i tried to check the latency last day and the result of East Us was 256ms. By the way if i will change my region what will happen then??

A Standard_B2ms has 8 GiB of memory which is likely the cause of the RDP delay you are seeing. I would try increasing to a Standard_B4ms to see if that helps.

For regions, you would just want to make sure that the Azure region is somewhat close to you but at 256 ms latency, that shouldn't be enough to cause much issue (certainly not the 5 to 10 seconds you mentioned). Depending on your ISP, you might be able to cut that down by a fraction of a second but it sounds like increasing your VM size is what is needed here.

In theory you should have credits ($200 in the case of an Azure free account) that you can use towards VM costs however there are some limitations, especially when there is a high demand for specific VM sizes. If that was the case, then you would need to upgrade to a paid subscription. Still, I would try different VM sizes using your free account. Anything with 16 GiB of memory should give you a significant increase in RDP performance.

You can troubleshoot the VM network throughput however this sounds like an issue between your connection and Azure. I'd recommend two articles for addressing this.

First is a blog by Marius Sandbu which provides an illustrated breakdown on troubleshooting networking issues in Azure. Note the route network traffic takes about half way through the blog:

Second is the network throughput documentation. It doesn't sound like this is the issue, but it would rule out any issues your VM might have with throughput:
