I am trying to open a word document. An update comes up then searches for update but says error oxc 0000142 comes up. What do I do? I do not know how to start am update. When I go into settings it say updates are pending

What version of Office are you using? Do you use Office 2016 or other versions of Office?
Please go to one Office app > File > Account > Product Information, share us the version name.
Does this issue also occur with other Office apps? Such as PowerPoint, Excel.
As DSPatrick suggested, please go to Control Panel > Program Files > Find and right click Office > Change > Perform a repair Office, such as Online Repair.
If the issue still persists, I would suggest you uninstall Office completely, restart your PC, and then install Office.
Such as Microsoft 365 and Office 2019, you may refer to "Download and install or reinstall Microsoft 365 or Office 2019 on a PC or Mac"
