Hi,

I have taken over an environment where Exchange Server 2010 RTM is installed on Win Server 2008. We've planned to migrate it to 2016 but for that exchange server 2010 needs to be in SP3. The DC is on separate VMs running on Win Server 2008 R2. The forest and domain functional levels are 2008. Since no update has ever happened to Exchange Server, is it possible to upgrade to SP3 in order to migrate it Exchange Server 2016?

Thanks in advance

Kartikeya

    Hi,

Yes, you can install SP3 on Exchange server 2010 RTM.

For coexistence with Exchange 2016, Update Rollup 11 for Exchange 2010 SP3 or later to be installed.

Also, for Exchange 2016, all the domain controllers in the forest need to be running Windows Server 2008 R2 or above and the forest functional level is Windows Server 2008 R2 or higher.

Please note that Exchange 2010 support has already been ended.

    Hi,Kartikeya.
is it possible to upgrade to SP3 in order to migrate it Exchange Server 2016?
Yes. Exchange 2010 RTM can be upgraded to Exchange 2010 SP3 directly.
And as Ashok mentioned, you also need to upgrade it to Exchange 2010 SP3 RU11 or later versions in order to have it coexist with Exchange Server 2016.
Then it can be migrated to Exchange Server 2016.

In addition, according to the Exchange Server supportability matrix,

you may need to upgrade your the Active Directory Forest function level to Windows Server 2008 R2 to support Exchange Server 2016 CU7 and later versions.
