Our customer has the below eenvironment and would like to purchase SQL Server CALs.

Can you please assist to answer their queries?

Environment:

  • 3 SQL Servers and 3 Application Servers are on 3 VMs on 1 physical server
  • For example, 10 Users will use the application which runs on this environment

We will purchase 10 SQL Server User CALs

Enquiries:

  • Do we need 3 SQL Server device CALs when the 3 Application Servers access the 3 SQL Servers besides a SQL User CAL per user?
  • Is it no problem to use 3 SQL Server “User” CALs for these 3 Application servers if we have 3 spare SQL Server User CALs?

    Hi

I highly recommend Not to use the forum for LICENSE questions. It might look like we understand since we orders several dozens licenses ourselves, but I learned that this subject can be very complex and you better read the small letters and understand it 100% before you recommend someone. There might be differences in locations, versions, editions, Machine resources, Various programs for partners, and much more. These are matters of law, not just technical data, and I recommend to ask Microsoft license department directly.

This is the official licensing page for SQL Server 2022, where you should start:

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/sql-server/sql-server-2022-pricing

This is the licensing page for SQL Server 2019:

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/Licensing/product-licensing/sql-server

You should download the licensing data sheet and licensing guide for the version you want to use.

If you are in north america you can call 1-800-426-9400, Monday through Friday, 6:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. (Pacific Time) to speak directly to a Microsoft licensing specialist, and you can get more detail information from them.

Worldwide customers can use the "Microsoft Licensing worldwide" Site to find contact information in their regional locations: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/licensing/worldwide

For information to contact the Service Support for your country, please use the https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/licensing/contact-us

I hope this cover all you need
