Virtual MIDI Port - Windows Server 2022

Question

Hello everyone, l've been digging through documentation and the internet, with no resolve. I'm hoping someone has come across this.

I'm currently configuring a Windows Server 2022 virtual machine (Linux Host Machine) to run some television broadcast backend software. This TV software needs to communicate with a lighting desk via MIDI (via RTP MIDI over the network). We cannot get any piece of midi software to recognise the MIDI port being outputted by RTP midi. We've also tried loopMIDI, and no software sees the MIDI ports being outputted from there also.

Even more perplexing, we have an identical setup on a virtual Windows Server 2019, hosted on the same Linux machine, and there is no issue with midi port discovery.

We have compared registries, config files, and drivers.

We can't seem to spot the issue.

Does anyone have any ideas on what might be happening? Any known issues with MIDI on windows server 2022? Any further troubleshooting steps to attempt?

Hello there,

This might be a known issue. After installing KB5022842 on guest virtual machines (VMs) running Windows Server 2022 on some versions of VMware ESXi, Windows Server 2022 might not start up. Only Windows Server 2022 VMs with Secure Boot enabled are affected by this issue. Affected versions of VMware ESXi are versions vSphere ESXi 7.0.x and below.

Hi all,

We've done some further testing and have isolated the issue to Server 2022 only.

We have tried MIDI on Windows 11, Windows 10 and Windows Server 2019. MIDI works correctly.

MIDI fails to work on Server 2022.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated! We'd love to move to the latest version (Server 2022), but this is a large blocker for our workflow.

Okay, for those that come across this with the same issue. I have finally found the solution!

By default, Windows Audio Service was not enabled in Server 2022. Therefore this prevented MIDI from working correctly. Once we enabled Windows Audio Service, MIDI worked correctly.

We found that Windows Audio Service was already enabled by default on Server 2019, Win 10 and Win 11.
