SQL 2016 SSL Certificate Renewal for Encrypted Connections

This is for SQL Server 2016. I have a server encryption certificate that is going to expire soon. I've had a new certificate created, but haven't done a renewal before. Can someone please advise the procedure for renewing the certificate. Specifically, when I install the new certificate using MMC, do I need to remove the existing certificate first?

In the online instructions for adding a certificate to SQL Server it states:

  • In the Protocols for <instance name> Properties dialog box, on the Certificate tab, select the desired certificate from the drop-down for the Certificate box, and then select OK.

Will SQL Configuration Manager show the old and new certificates in the dropdown so I can select the renewed one, otherwise how does it know which certificate to select?

Any assistance would be appreciated.

    Hi @Chris Duff,

After you choose the certificate, it will show the expiration date.

Choose the new certificate and apply.
