Depending on your description, you might not have the correct digital certificate or key to decrypt the email.
How you decrypt an email depends on which encryption method the sender used:
- If you are using S/MIME encryption, you must first add the certificate to the keychain on your computer. After you set up the signing certificate on your computer, you need to configure it in Outlook. For more details, see: Encrypt email messages - Microsoft Support.
- If you're using Microsoft 365 encryption, you need an account with open mail permissions to sign into Office. For example, a one-time code or higher privileges. Also, if you're a user outside your organization, ask the sender to sign in to Azure AD to add the account as a guest. Then see if you can encrypt the email.
