Where to create retention tags and policy for hybrid exchange?

Hi Tech Community,

I need to know that we have hybrid exchange environment and I have to enable an archiving for several mailboxes that exists in cloud. So, the question here is that i created a retention tag in cloud and applied to the user but when i am enabling archive it doesn't get applied and giving an error. "to enable a cloud-based archive mailbox for this user, you must use your on-premises exchange admin center or exchange management shell."

    Also, one more thing i would like to add, if I have to enable archiving from on-prem server, do I have to create a retention tags and policies on-prem and the cloud policies and tags won't applied to cloud? I am confused here.

    Yes, if you are syncing the accounts from on-prem to Azure, you need to create the new online archive on-prem:

    If the primary mailbox exists in 365, set the retention tags there. If the primary mailbox is on-prem but the online archive is in 365, set the tags on-prem
