whether azure file share snapshot can restore permission

We want to know whether Azure file share snapshot can restore the same file permission, can you please help to confirm?

the permission, we mentioned is on-prem permission, the user is using storage sync to sync file share to the on-prem VM, after restoring file share to the previous version and then syncing to on-prem, the user found the file on on-prem permission was not restored.

We have azure file sync service, and it is syncing files form On-Premise server to Storage Account. We have azure backup which is backing files from storage account. We are restoring backup from azure backup to the Storage Account however it is not restoring files with original permission.

@suresh Reddy Thanks for raising this good question. I am checking on this thread,

Yes, we expect the permissions to be restored. But having said that the Permission restore failure is soft failure for backup service.

There is no error during restoration. we are syncing files to on-prem using storage sync, hence, the permission user can check is on the on-prem side

My question is for an Azure file share, does it contain an on-prem permission attribute?

if the Azure file share doesn't contain an on-prem permission attribute, i think it's expected (the user cannot restore permission from the backup.)

or will syncing file share from on-prem to Azure sync on-prem permission on the file to Azure as well?

@suresh Reddy Backup handling of permissions start from Azure file properties, so whatever permissions the file brought to cloud via RESTapi/SMB mount/File sync are the ones Backup is capable of backup/restore.

So, if the on-prem permission attributes are lost during move to cloud file, then backup can’t restore.

If the Cloud file has permissions and during restore if they are lost/not expected, we can investigate it.
