How to REALLY sort my inbox by date received

My inbox messages are not, repeat NOT, sorted by date. I have already adjusted the filters by date, from newest to oldest, and sorted by messages as messages vs. conversations. I STILL don't have an email inbox that is sorted by date that my messages were received. What am I missing, please? Thank you.
